I create videos and still images using subject matter whose intrinsic nature is to repeat, oscillate, bounce, surge, and glow. I seek out places that require a period of exploration in which peculiarities surface in relation to the space, light, color of, or movement within the place. I take advantage of the mediation that occurs in translating these firsthand experiences into moving imagery and sound. Although my work uses recognizable imagery, I am more interested in using only certain elements of narrative, such as tension, suspense, or suspension to accentuate and extend a moment, or series of moments, within an event. In this way the videos and images can be seen as an examination or meditation on the experience of place, as well as the memory of Nature and its unlimited manifestations, subjects, and surprises.
Over the last several years, I have traveled to over half of the national parks in the U.S., to Iceland and the Swiss Alps, and to numerous small nature preserves, parks and other natural environs, to gather audio and video material. Subject matter has included mountains and clouds, salt flats, bodies of water of every type, waterfalls and rainbows, caves, trees and sky, the moon in its many phases and moods, and a solar eclipse, to name a few. I bring back all of these things to the studio as source material to revisit and manipulate into videos that transform and augment the experience of the subject or event.
